Social Media Drives An End To The Era Of ‘Couch Potatoes’
With lifestyle diseases on the
rise and the Arab world grappling with the burden of high healthcare costs, can
social media lead to a positive change? Experts addressing a panel session Media Marketing Dubai held on the second
day of Arab Social Media Influencers Summit are optimistic.
The panel discussion moderated by
MBC Presenter, Howayda Abou-Heif, with speakers including Chef and Author,
Deema Hajjawi and Chef and TV Host, Osama El Sayed, observed social media can
create better awareness about healthy lifestyle choices.
Chef Osama who has over 2 million
followers on channels such as YouTube and Facebook feels that social media has
helped him reach out masses, across the globe.
“At first, I started exploring
YouTube as a platform to popularise Arab cuisine in other parts of the world.
However, social media has now gained media
advertising in Dubai momentum as the premier forum for information sharing
and discussion and this is a huge opportunity.
“My followers are most active on
Facebook and I use it to inform them on new trends or to share customised
recipes that cater to people with various health concerns, such as sugar or
gluten free recipes,” said Chef Osama.
Deema Hajjawi discussed how
social media had increasing relevance in the Arab world where cholestrol and
obesity-related issues were a huge concern. “With social media, more people are
aware of healthier eating habits and it also provides easy access to
information, recipes and tips from a wide variety of experts at the click of a
button.
“My own health philosophy has
always been everything in moderation and I have tried to reflect that in my
recipes and blogs. I find that my followers in the Middle East are mainly on
Instagram. Dubai Business Recommending
portion sizes as well as providing links to certify nutrition boards are some
of the methods I have used to create greater awareness,” said Deema.
Organised under the patronage of
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime
Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Arab Social Media Influencers
Summit brought together more than 1500 social media experts from Arab countries
and across the world for Business in
Dubai. As many as 38 leading speakers and influencers inspired young Arabs
to employ their innovative ideas to serve the Arab community through optimal
use of social media channels.
